The Department of Music Science and Art (DMSA) of the University of Macedonia, Greece was founded in 1996 (presidential decree 363/96) and received its first students in the academic year 1998-9. From early on the Department formed its education, research and development policies to promote the attainment of its artistic and academic goals. Currently, it forms part of the ‘Association Europeenne des Conservatoires, Academies de Musique et Musikhochschulen’ (A.E.C.).

General Presentation and Mission Statement

The principal mission of the DMSA is the high-calibre and well-rounded training of tomorrow’s musicians, along with the cultivation and advancement of the Art of Music through the following four set Majors:

i)                    European Classical Music

ii)                  Byzantine Music

iii)                Greek Traditional (Demotiki) Music

iv)                Contemporary Music

With regard to its function and its mission within Greece, the Department’s correspondence to European and American University Music Departments is a music-educational breakthrough.

The DMSA premises ‘Major Applied Areas’ as ‘Specialisations’, something which is in accordance with its founding law. In consoncance with the nature and content of each Major, there is a focus on matters of technique and interpretation on the one hand (European Classical, Byzantine, Greek Traditional Music), and on issues of music creation and composition on the other (Greek Traditional, Contemporary Music). At the same time, theoretical study and academic research form a central part of each of all four Majors.

The development of music ensembles such as the Orchestra, the Choir, Traditional Music and other instrumental and vocal ensembles is an important aspect of the DMSA’s life. These participate in musical events of international scope, representing Greece and projecting the ecumenical character of its music as it evolved from antiquity until today.

Finally, the Department of Music Science and Art embodies a beginning for the cultivation of the Art of Music in Greek Higher Education, contributing greatly to the advancement of Artistic Education in Greece.
