    Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be familiar with:

    2nd The implemented economic policies (fiscal, monetary, exchange rate etc.), as they are shaped within the framework of different macroeconomic schools of thought.

     

    3rd The objectives of the implemented policies, as defined by the economic policy actors, and the tools used to achieve them.

     

    4thThe expected outcomes of economic policies on national production, inflation, unemployment, exchange rates, fiscal results, public debt, etc.

    The course aims to acquire economic knowledge, the use of which is necessary for understanding:

     

    1stThe specific characteristics of key macroeconomic variables targeted by economic policies (unemployment, inflation, economic growth, income distribution, etc.).

     

    2ndThe interaction of political and economic thought within the framework of the process of shaping and implementing economic policies.

     

    3rdThe interaction of implemented economic policies in the attempt to achieve economic goals.

     

    The course contributes to acquiring skills for writing and publicly presenting individual or group work, thus fostering critical and self-critical thinking, expanding students' analytical thinking, developing harmonious collaborative and leadership skills, and promoting creative and, primarily, inductive thinking.

    The delivery of the course’s material is based on basic economic and mathematical tools, which are known to the students from the courses of Macroeconomics and Mathematics.

    Specifically-defined evaluation criteria are given, and if and where they are accessible to students.

     

     

    The course is assessed by final written examinations, in Greek, accounting for 100% of the overall mark. The assessment of the course is based on multiple choice questions. There is no choice in questions to be answered. The correct answers are scored with 0.5 points.

    Course Outlines

    1. The course’s aim is the introduction and understanding of 1st the basic concepts of the International Trade Theory, 2nd the reasoning behind the development of international commercial relations between the economies and the effects of these on the countries’ macroeconomic magni-tudes and 3rd the presentation of the welfare effects that result after the implementation of economic policies that aim to protect national producers from international competition. The achievement of this aim is pursued through the presentation, and use, of basic concepts and tools of the International Trade Theory such as: (i) tradeable & non – tradeable goods,  (ii) equilibrium of goods’ market, (iii) autarky and free trade regimes, (iv) the principles of absolute and relative comparative advantage, (v) the production possibilities curve, (vi) trade balance, exchange rates & the labor productivity, (vii) the production specialization and economic growth, (viii) trade policy measures , (ix) the terms of trade and (x) the international flows of labor.

    1. The subject of the course is the introduction of studentsto the scientific disciplines of Open Economy Macroeco-nomics&International Monetary Relations. The material of the course covers a range of definitions, economic concepts and theories of exchange rate determinations such as(i)the bilateral spot and forward exchange rates, (ii)the exchange rate market equilibrium, (iii)the triangular arbitrage of currencies, (iv)the uncovered and covered interest parity theories, (v)the foreign exchange intervention policies in spot & forward markets, (vi)the Purchasing Power Parity theory of exchange rates, (vii)the real and nominal effective exchange rate, (viii)the Monetary & Keynesian approaches of exchange rates determination, (ix)the Current Account Balance and the Portfolio theories of exchange rates determination,(x)the affection of exchange rates by the productivity of production inputs, the international terms of trade and public debt, (xi) the Absorption theory of exchange rates determination and (xii) the Mundell – Flemingmodel.
