Giannis Assael: From the University of Macedonia to Google DeepMind

Giannis Assael graduated from the Department of Applied Informatics of the University of Macedonia in 2013. With a full scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation, he went on to do an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Oxford, where in 2014 he was awarded the Tony Hoare Prize for Outstanding Performance. His studies focused on the field of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning (and electric bass). In 2015 he continued for a MRes in Machine Learning at Imperial College London with a full scholarship from the HiPEDS program. Having the second-best performance of his class, he returned to the University of Oxford for a PhD (DPhil) in Machine Learning with a full Oxford Scholarship - Google DeepMind Graduate Scholarship. During his studies, he completed more than 50 projects, and his research has often attracted the attention of the media (BBC, Reuters, New Scientist). In 2017 he became the co-founder of LipNet.ai, revolutionizing speech recognition using end-to-end sentence-level lip-reading. He currently continues his research as a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind.
