Message of the Dean of the School of Information Sciences

The Department of Applied Informatics at the University of Macedonia is already navigating its fourth decade of operation. As the first Department of Informatics in Thessaloniki and one of the first established in Greece, it has developed and evolved multidimensionally over this period. Today, it counts more than 30 faculty members, hundreds of active students, and an even greater number of alumni. The Department constitutes the single-department School of Information Sciences.

The Department combines the theory of Informatics with its applications, particularly in the fields of Economics and Administration, upholding the tradition of the University of Macedonia. This is reflected in both the undergraduate curriculum of the two introductory tracks ("Computer Science & Technology" and "Information Systems") and in the Master’s (MSc) programs it organizes or co-organizes: MSc in Applied Informatics, Inter-institutional MSc in Law and Informatics, MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, and Professional MSc in Enterprise Software Systems Development

At the Department of Applied Informatics, we place great emphasis on education and research. Our curricula are frequently updated to respond to current scientific and technological developments, while our infrastructure and facilities are continuously upgraded. We invest in procedures established and implemented with a focus on open access for all. Excellence plays a central role in the Department's strategic development. We have established awards for top student performance and teaching excellence, while continuously formulating new incentives to improve both the educational and research operations of the Department.

We place significant weight on extroversion by strengthening the participation of students and faculty in exchange programs (e.g., within the framework of Erasmus). Furthermore, we cultivate continuous collaboration with IT companies and organizations, both for student internships and for organizing joint actions, such as informational events and consulting sessions (through the operation of an Industrial Advisory Board). We support networking activities and strengthen volunteerism through the operation of special interest student groups.

Graduates of the Department achieve very high absorption rates in the private sector, and several have been appointed to corresponding positions in the public sector, while many venture into the arenas of research and innovation. A significant portion of our graduates chooses to continue their studies abroad, with some remaining there to work for major companies or to secure academic positions at universities.

The Dean of the single-department School of Information Sciences
