Gender Equality Committee
1. A Committee for Gender Equality (GEC) has been appointed at the University of Macedonia as an advisory body of the Senate and the Administrations of the Schools and Departments for the promotion of gender equality at all levels of its operation and in everyday actions of the academic life , as defined in the current legislation.
2. The GEC consists of nine members : six (6) of them are faculty members, one (1) member of the teaching staff, one (1) of the administrative staff and one (1) student as well as an equal number of alternate members. Its members have a three-year term and are appointed after an open invitation of interest, issued by the Rector. Candidates are evaluated by a three-member committee appointed by the Senate, who in turn submit a ranking list and an official proposal addressed the Senate.
Members are elected by the Senate on account of their work and their general contribution in the fields of gender equality, the fight against inequalities, discrimination and efforts of social exclusion. During the above procedure, the Senate may also appoint alternate members from each above mentioned University members category, based on the recommendation of the three-member advisory committee.
3. Members of the Committee assembly for the first time following an invitation of the Rector. During this meeting, the President of the Committee is elected by a secret ballot among its members.
The duties of the GEC are assigned in the relevant legal provisions.
5. In order to regulate in particular issues related to the support of victims of discrimination or harassment, the GEC provides mediation services based on its agreed protocols and, when necessary, proposes to the Rector and the Senate necessary measures to promote equality and combat sexism.
6. The GEC of the University of Macedonia, in the context of its operation under this article and in the execution of its responsibilities:
a. Functions as a link between the University and other academic institutions nationwide and abroad, social entities and organizations with similar responsibilities for the promotion via synergies of special knowledge, know-how and skills on issues of gender and equality, especially through the implementation of study programs, educational seminars, research activities and open events.
b. Operates in accordance with its Rules of Procedure approved by the Senate.
c. Collaborates with other relevant bodies and structures of the University (i.e. Student Counseling and Support Center, Student Provost, Ethics Committee, Legal Office) whenever necessary to jointly address and manage gender equality issues.
