    Course Outlines

The course analyses international military conflicts in the post Cold War era and the efforts by the international community to intervene through military and non-military measures to manage or resolve them. After a theoretical discussion on the different perspectives that IR theory offers to conflict resolution, (conflict resolution theory), the course examines the interaction between diplomacy and coercive measures even through the use of military force by international agents in order to terminate an international crisis or at least manage its evolution. The course also investigates the international mechanisms of state reconstruction and peace building in areas that have experienced the consequences of war. In order to ascertain the evolutionary character of international crisis management in the last three decades, this course analyses a number of crises and military conflicts, especially in the Balkans, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Libya, Syria and others. In the course, a comparative assessment evolves discussing the role of both international organizations and other international groupings such as “coalitions of the willing.” Successes and failures of international crisis management are also assessed through argumentation and discussion during classes. The course aims at rendering students familiar to the conflict resolution mechanisms, including the peacebuilding efforts as they have evolved in contemporary international politics

    Course Outlines

The course examines the means and mechanisms through which states and international organizations strive to communicate their policies and their “identity” to different audiences, either to the internal or international public sphere. The course examines, in historical perspective, the role of communication not only in public policy but also in international relations while it introduces the students to strategic communication, as the latter evolves in recent years from governments and international organizations. The course also analyzes Greece’s efforts to establish a coherent Hellenic communication policy. In addition, different international actors including the EU, the UN, NATO are examined in their effort to promote effective strategic communication. The course also delves into a comparative analysis of the “public diplomacy” of certain governments by focusing on the mechanisms and policies aiming at managing their national image through nation branding, which can prove to function as a profound element of a state’s national grand strategy.

    Course Outlines

The course focuses on the study of special issues of contemporary International Relations revolving around wider interpretation of the concept of security by analyzing its composite character and its ability to cross the three levels of analysis of International Relations. More specifically, it examines international phenomena that involve human, national and international security, such as: energy security and states’ competition, nuclear security, the role of dysfunctional or failed states, maritime piracy and maritime security, different aspects of international organized crime and its interconnection with terrorism, as well as border security, in order to provide an enhanced scientific inquiry into contemporary security challenges that states are called to address. More often than not, tackling those security issues can evolve into major pillars of states’ foreign policy, involving not only the quest for maximization of power but also the need to effectively counter security dilemmas stemming from the quest for natural sources. In addition, this course examines the mechanisms of institutional cooperation aiming at addressing those challenges which threaten not only international, but also national and human security.  For this reason, the role of the EU in its efforts to address those challenges through the development of certain policies and policy instruments is also briefly examined given its evolving objective to promote a comprehensive approach in dealing with those security challenges and threats.

    Course Outlines

The course analyzes the role of the EU as a political actor in its external relations with an emphasis on its European Foreign and Security Policy in a changing international system. The historical evolution of CFSP is presented as well as the evolution of its operational wing which is the Common Security and Defence Policy- CSDP. The course aims to make students familiar with not only the difficulties but also the efforts of EU member states to work together in building their security and defence cooperation in order to counter multiple security challenges. The course also assesses EU relations with different subsystems and geographic areas as well as with international organizations such as the UN and most importantly with NATO on issues related to European security and defence. All treaties supporting CFSP and CSDP are analysed including all strategic documents (2003/2008, 2016, 2022) as well as the current efforts of the EU member states to depict their strategic ambition in building a security and defence union, an issue particularly critical after Russia’s (second)invasion in Ukraine in 2022.
