The course delves into the anthropological study of Greek society and the societies of Southeastern Europe from the 20th century to the present. It critically examines the historical context and the conditions that shaped the Greek and Balkan regions as fields of anthropological research. It explores prevalent themes in different periods through compelling ethnographic examples. The course also uncovers the unique conditions for anthropological research during the Cold War and the intriguing relationship of anthropology with the scientific branches of folklore and ethnology, which were dominant models of societal study in Greece and the Balkans during the socialist period.

In this context, the course studies the historical and contemporary aspects of social reality and daily life, strongly emphasising the practices and politics of difference and culture. It focuses on new forms of cultural difference and the collective identities that emerge in forms of performative culture. The course also examines the role of state politics and other supranational institutions (e.g., the EU, etc.) in the social, political, and economic transformations experienced by the Balkan societies, underlining the practical relevance and importance of the course content.

This course aims to showcase the potential of critical anthropological analysis in understanding society and culture. It highlights the unique benefits of the anthropological method in studying the relationship between hegemonic ideologies, practical policies, political objectives, historical contexts, and socio-political developments.

Course Outlines

The study of geopolitical borders is a very recent area in anthropology. It approaches borders as distinct geographical areas where the institutions of the nation-state are reproduced, national and other collective entities are shaped, discourses and identities are constructed, and dynamic relationships develop among geopolitical, economic, political, social, and symbolic boundaries of states and populations.

The course draws on examples from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the broader Mediterranean area to analyse critical concepts such as politics, power, resistance, ideology, citizenship, security, materiality, temporality, and subjectivity. It examines legal and illegal population mobility, addressing the relationship between hegemonic discourses and local forms of action in border communities. It also discusses how daily life and relationships with populations from the other side of the border are organised, as well as perceptions of space and time through the demarcation of the natural landscape and the organisation of individual and collective memory. Processes that traverse and undermine geopolitical borders, such as using modern technology, economically oriented activities like entrepreneurship, trade, consumption, smuggling, kinship and social networks, and various forms and institutions of cross-border cooperation are also explored.

By the end of the course, participants will have acquired a robust set of conceptual and methodological tools and skills. These will enable them to conduct in-depth analyses of phenomena and processes related to geopolitical borders, understand their political significance, and appreciate their role in the contemporary global context. This knowledge and skill set will be helpful for future studies or careers in anthropology, international relations, or related fields.

Course Outlines

The course examines the anthropological study of Eastern and Southeastern Europe as it has been documented through ethnographic fieldwork, from the first decades of the 20th century to the present day. It explores the relationship between anthropology, folklore and local epistemological paradigms of ethnology which formed the academic fields engaged in the study of culture in Eastern and Southeastern Europe from a historical and contemporary perspective.

The course will discuss the way in which the very notion of ‘the Balkans’ was defined as a field of ethnographic studies. It will also examine the historical, social, political and economic context within which these disciplines were developed. We will focus on the experience of socialism and the social, political and economic transformations undergoing in the area since 1989. Various ethnographic case studies will provide us with an understanding of collective identity formation, violence as a social relationship, identity politics, migration networks, and refugee experiences.

Course Outlines

The course introduces students to Area Studies, which is the combined study of entire geographical areas through various scientific fields. More particularly, it focuses on ethnographic field research and anthropological analysis and investigates the establishment of a branch of critical area studies. At the same time, it highlights the contribution of anthropology, history, cultural studies and political economy to the systematisation of this type of approach.

First, we examine the political system of European colonialism and the ideology of evolution in their encounter with anthropology (second half of the 19th century). This development led to the consolidation of area studies in the Western world and the formation of relations of power and cultural hegemony of the West over the "Others", European and non-European societies and cultures.

At the same time, the course discusses the role of folklore studies as a science, which has contributed to the formation of the modern Greek national identity and is the legacy of a long academic tradition. Social Anthropology discusses with folklore studies the study and critical understanding of modern Greek culture, as it is defined by the forces of European modernity and the challenges of globalization.

In the post-1950 era, the emergence of anthropology in Greece and the wider region marks the beginning of a new academic interest in the margins of Europe (Balkans, Mediterranean, Middle East) and establishes ethnographic research as its methodological study tool of the "Other" and "elsewhere".

This new approach lays the foundations for establishing a new type of area studies governed by interdisciplinarity. It stands critically against the epistemological and political traditions of Colonialism and European colonization.

The course, through the lens of ethnographic research, fosters critical thinking and analysis of issues such as tradition, modernity, and social transformations. These discussions are instrumental in developing a nuanced understanding of the present and the past, the 'Self ', and the neighbouring societies in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.

The course not only provides a theoretical understanding of anthropology but also emphasizes its practical application. It explores the significance of anthropology in social analysis, cultural understanding, cultural policies, and the preservation of tradition and cultural heritage. Furthermore, it equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage intercultural encounters with neighbours, immigrants, and outsiders, making the course highly relevant in today's globalized world.

The purpose of this course is to introduce MA students to the disciplinary area of Political Anthropology, as a particular branch of the discipline of Social Anthropology with an emphasis on the Regions of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The focus of the course is on the regional particularities of theory and research in the regions. Emphasis is placed on the familiarization with the relevant ethnographic texts that constitute the basis for the corpus of Balkan and East European Anthropology. The course also addresses the relations between Ethnography (fieldwork research) and Social Anthropology (analysis) The syllabus is based on ethnographic texts, films, and documentaries.

Course Outlines

The qualitative analysis methodology in social sciences revolves around field research and discourse analysis. This course introduces students to epistemological, theoretical, and methodological aspects of ethnographic research. Students will also learn about various types of textual discourse, such as institutional and public discourse, archival records, everyday language, and personal narratives.

The course is designed to equip students with practical skills in conducting social research through ethnography. It covers developing appropriate research methods, selecting data collection techniques, and determining the research question. It also examines the real-world challenges of being in the field, ethical research issues, analysis strategies, and the complexities that arise from the researcher's position in the field and the scientific text.

The course encourages students to critically examine the relationship between the components of the ethnographic method (on-site research, participatory observation, ethnographic diary, historical ethnography, online ethnography, etc.) and the politics of scientific writing. This exploration paves the way for students to develop their own unique research perspectives. 

The aim is to support students in writing ethnographies incorporating a critical perspective, self-referentiality, reflexivity, and imaginative experiments and, more generally, creating scientific texts for the social sciences. These texts are grounded in qualitative analysis and correspond with current trends in social theory and social, cultural, and postcolonial critique.
