Early Music and Modal musical traditions of the Mediterranean


Description of Specialization:

This specialization offers a study program with two specializations and high-level interactive courses focusing on :a) European early music and historical performance until the 18th century through the study of the repertoire and the sources of that time; b) the historical and contemporary trends and practices of selected Mediterranean musical idioms in the light of multimodality and improvisation. The aim of the specialization is to explore the common musical avenues between East and West as well as the links and common origins of European and Mediterranean modal traditions.   

 

Specialization: Early Music

It focuses on the study of European music until the 18th century through an updated historical review of performance. It is about modern and old instruments as well as singers. The course lasts 3 semesters and concludes with a solo repertoire and chamber music concert. Depending on their instrument and orientation, students create the repertoire and choose the historical period of their specialization.

 

Specialization: Musical Traditions of the Mediterranean

It focuses on the study and contemporary view of classical and folk music traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean, through established or contemporary/experimental musical ensembles. It concerns performers of Eastern or European, old or modern musical instruments as well as singers. The course lasts 3 semesters and concludes with a concert/group project. Depending on their instrument and orientation, students create the repertoire and choose the historical period of their specialization.
