    Course Outlines

    The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the basic principles of computer science and information technology. It also aims to introduce them to the main concepts related to the Internet.

    Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to understand and describe the basic parts and architecture of a computer, the concept of algorithm and structured programming. as well as networks and the Internet.
    Regarding the laboratory part of the course, students are familiarized with laboratory practice and a series of compulsory tasks using cloud computing applications (web pages and questionnaires) and spreadsheet applications.

    Course Outlines

    The course initially introduces the basics of Multimedia Systems. Students are also introduced to Database Management Systems using the Ms Access program, which outlines the fundamental concepts for the design, use and implementation of database systems along with conceptual modeling techniques with anemphasis on the Entity-Relationship (OS) model. Finally, extensive reference is made to relational data models and relational databases. In the laboratory courses, the basics of Ms Access as a commercial database software package are implemented in practice.nd a series of compulsory tasks using cloud computing applications (web pages and questionnaires) and spreadsheet applications.

    Το μάθημα έχει σαν σκοπό να εισάγει τους φοιτητές στον σύγχρονο κόσμο των ψηφιακών μέσων επικοινωνίας και ενημέρωσης και ακολούθως να περιγράψει τις κοινωνικοπολιτικές επιδράσεις της χρησιμοποίησης των μέσων αυτών. Θεωρώντας ότι τα σύγχρονα ψηφιακά μέσα προσφέρουν πλέον ένα δυναμικά εξελισσόμενο κανάλι αμφίδρομης επικοινωνίας, μελετώνται θέματα όπως: οι μορφές τους, η ιστορική τους εξέλιξη, η κοινωνική τους διάχυση, η δυνατότητα διαμόρφωσης κοινωνικών τάσεων και της κοινής γνώμης όπως επίσης και η δυνατότητα επιρροής της πολιτικής σφαίρας.
    Ιδιαίτερη εμβάθυνση γίνεται και στον τομέα των Μέσων Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης και στον σύγχρονο κοινωνικοπολιτικό ρόλο που έχουν αποκτήσει όπως: την ενημέρωση, τη δυνατότητα διαμόρφωσης κοινοτήτων, την οργάνωση κινημάτων, την χρησιμοποίηση τους για εκστρατείες ενημέρωσης κ.α.
    Το μάθημα χωρίζεται σε 3 ενότητες: τα Γενικά Εισαγωγικά Στοιχεία, την ενότητα της Δημόσιας Σφαίρας (Public Sphere) και την ενότητα των Social Media. Πιο συγκεκριμένα οι θεματικές περιοχές που αναλύονται ανά ενότητα είναι:

    Course Description

    This course surveys the rapid development of digital media – radio, television, the Internet, video services, social networking sites and mobile technology. It focuses on their social diffusion and it analyzes the impact of these media on the news industry and more broadly on society, local and international politics. It aims to provide a platform for students to engage and critically analyze the issues surrounding the multifaceted relationships between digital media and the society.
    The course lectures are divided in 3 sections: the introductory lectures, the section of the ‘Public Sphere’ lectures and the Social Media lectures. More specifically, the topics of each section are:

    Introductory lectures
    Digital Networked Media, Information Society, Network Society, Cybercultures, Communication Power

    The Public Sphere lectures
    Information and Democratic Society, Social Movements, Online Action, Internet Activism, Campaigns, Digital Divide, Privacy, Surveillance Society.

    Social Media lectures
    Social Media, Social Networking, Social Networking Analysis, Virtual Communities, Participatory Culture, Social Media and Mobile Youth Culture.

    This course aims to provide students with a general introduction to some of the most salient issues surrounding the relationship between the Internet and Politics. It is structured around two broad but interrelated questions. Firstly, how has politics affected the evolution of the internet both in the past and in the present? And secondly, how does the internet affect traditional forms of political activity
    and mobilisation? To this end the course focuses on three substantive domains: 1) the governance of the internet's technological architecture; 2) the internet's impact on a number of policy domains (e.g. copyright, privacy, surveillance and security, digital divide, etc.) and 3) the use of the internet as a potential tool for enhancing participation and democratic governance. The course is open to students from a variety of backgrounds and does not presuppose any particular technical knowledge.
    The course lectures are divided in 3 sections: the Introductory lectures, the Politics of the Internet area lectures and the Internet Policy area lectures. More specifically:
